ARN Fact Book Shows Decline In Passengers And Sales

Airport Revenue News (ARN) has released the sales performance results for the top 50 performing airports in North America in its current edition of the ARN Fact Book. The data, based on calendar year 2009 information, reveal a 6% decrease in domestic enplanements to 550 million compared to 2008, as well as a 7% decrease in total sales to $4.9B in the food and beverage, specialty retail and news and gifts categories combined.

Specifically, total sales in food and beverage were $3.02B, a decrease of 5%; in news and gifts $971M, down 9% and the severest decline was in specialty retail with sales of  $887M or down 11%. Average sales per enplanement for all three categories combined were down 1% to $8.73.

“With the economic recession still in full swing in 2009, fewer people were traveling through airports, therefore fewer people were spending in airports and those who were spent less on average,” says Pauline Armbrust president & CEO of ARN. “The good news is, preliminary results show enplanements and sales trending higher in 2010.”
