ATL Lauded For Installation Of Water-Conservation Efforts

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International (ATL) is flush with pride at an award it received last week.

The Chattahoochee Riverkeeper, a non-profit organization, honored the airport with its 2012 Best in Class – Business award for ATL’s project to install efficient, low-flow toilets, which save more than 55 million gallons of water each year.

“Hartsfield-Jackson continuously strives to reduce its impact on the environment, and we have worked hard to reduce our water usage,” says Aviation General Manager Louis Miller. “With nearly 250,000 people passing through the airport every day, the extra water saved with low-flow toilets adds up quickly. It’s not only the responsible thing to do for the environment but also a financially sound decision.”

The airport and co-winners city of Atlanta, Ga., and TOTO USA were given the awards at the Morrow facility, where TOTO USA manufactures the toilets.

The Chattahoochee Riverkeeper worked with utility companies to identify local companies and organizations that were going above and beyond for water conservation. Its findings were included in its 2012 “Filling the Water Gap: Conservation Successes and Missed Opportunities in Metro Atlanta” report .

The airport and TOTO USA were lauded for installing water-efficient plumbing fixtures throughout ATL: 630 new toilets, 1,200 urinals and more than 1,000 faucets to date.

The city of Atlanta was chosen mainly for its participation in the Better Buildings Challenge, a national campaign to promote energy conservation.
