Executive Director Chosen For PIT

The Allegheny County Airport Authority Board voted unanimously to approve Bradley D. Penrod as its new executive director. He replaces Kent G. George October 5.

Penrod has served the board for 24 years, most recently as COO since 1999, and was interim executive director before the board hired George.
Chairman Glenn Mahone cited Penrod’s long tenure, his experience and his credentials as consistent with the Authority’s vision initiated under George’s leadership for operating Pittsburgh International (PIT). While in his current position, industry observers say Penrod has been instrumental in helping the airport recover from losing its status as a hub for US Airways. It’s done so by attracting several low-fare carriers and becoming more of an O&D airport.

Penrod could not immediately be reached for comment. But in addition to his work at PIT, he is the immediate past president of the Northeast Chapter of the American Association of Airport Executives (NECAAAE). Thomas Rafter, airport director at Atlantic City International (ACY), preceded Penrod as president of NECAAAE. Rafter says Penrod is incredibly detail oriented and thorough, and knowledgeable about almost all issues facing the industry.

He’s been a good steward for PIT through involvement in AAAE and Airports Council International-North America and is respected for his work at PIT since US Airways’ service decreased.

But he’s not all business, Rafter adds. Penrod deals well with people and is quick with a joke.

“He’s an honest guy, he’s got a fun sense of humor and he’s very personable,” Rafter says. “He’s just a down to Earth person.”

Penrod is an FAA licensed private pilot, has held numerous positions in aviation professional organizations, and been published in journals on topics including airport operations and airfield safety. He has a Masters degree from Duquesne University and lives with his wife, Karen, in North Fayette Township, PA.
