Honor Flight Austin Brings Veterans To WWII Memorial

The first Honor Flight from Austin, Texas, took place June 12, taking 25 World War II veterans, ages 86 to 98, to the national World War II Museum in Washington, D.C.

The day began at 6:45 a.m., when Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell and a color guard greeted the veterans in the ticket lobby. Shortly after, they boarded their flight.

Honor Flight Austin is a non-profit organization created to honor veterans by taking them to visit and reflect at their war memorials. Through donations to the organization, veterans are able to take the flights at no cost to them. Flights are operated and sponsored by Southwest Airlines. Honor Flight Austin serves veterans who live in Travis, Williamson, Hays, Bastrop and Caldwell counties.
