The U.S. Green Building Council has awarded John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) a gold certification for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance. Terminal 4 achieved this distinction with the help of CodeGreen, which consulted on energy and sustainability during the certification process.
The LEED rating system was developed by the USGBC to distinguish buildings, homes and communities that are designed, constructed, maintained and operated to better human and environmental health.
LEED scores for six environmental criteria, and there are four levels of LEED certification: certified, silver, gold and platinum.
JFK Terminal 4 achieved its gold certification by outperforming other airport terminals in energy management, reduction of water consumption and ratio of recycled material to total waste.
