Phoenix International Unveils First PHX Sky Train(TM) Car

The first PHX Sky Train(TM) car was unveiled Aug. 16 at Phoenix Sky Harbor International (PHX).

The train will bring airport visitors between the regional METRO light rail system, PHX’s East Economy Parking and Terminal 4 starting in early 2013. By early 2015, it will serve all airport terminals and will go to the Sky Harbor Rental Car Center by 2020.

“The Phoenix Sky Train will forever be known in Phoenix as one of the greatest, most forward-thinking projects of our time,” says Phoenix Aviation Director Danny Murphy. “It will serve our customers well into the future.”

Cars will be tested along the guide way next year. The first 18 cars were shipped in August and will be assembled into two- and three-car trains. The trains will not have drivers and will run on an electrically powered, center-rail guide way. It will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

More than 8,000 people have been employed in the Phoenix area for construction of the first two sections of the PHX Sky Train(TM), and more than 170 in Pittsburgh, Pa.

“Train construction is on time and on budget,” says Murphy. “We are also very proud of the fact that the PHX Sky Train will be LEED certified.”
