SFO Helps City Celebrate Shanghai With Exhibit, Music

San Francisco International (SFO) has kicked off summer by unveiling “Shanghai: High-Rise Architecture and the Remaking of China’s Gateway to the World” in conjunction with the city of San Francisco’s yearlong Shanghai Celebration. At the same time, the airport is launching “You Are Hear,” it’s seasonal live music program with special Chinese musical performances from Bay Area musicians.

“Whether touching down in San Francisco, or on your way out of town, we hope travelers will enjoy this great diverse and eclectic convergence of art, architecture and music right here at the airport,” says John L. Martin, director of San Francisco International.

The “High-Rise Architecture” exhibit features models, drawings, photographs and digital animation representing 11 architectural projects at the transformation of Shanghai. It also explores how the city’s skyline reveals social, cultural and economic revival.

The music series kicked off May 27, and will continue 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Friday through Aug. 27.

The yearlong Shanghai Celebration is presented by Bay Area organizations to honor the city’s relationship with Shanghai. Various special events mark the celebration, including concerts, performances, films, exhibitions and discussions.

The airport recently recognized three employees for their outstanding customer service with the annual Above and Beyond award, which honors staff who go out of their way to help travelers.

“Our winners raise the bar for all of us at SFO,” Martin says. “With every smile, every extra offer of help – these exemplary employees and their establishments make traveling more enjoyable for all of us.”

Mystery shoppers visited restaurants, retailers and service providers throughout the airport during a two-month span, making a variety of requests and asking questions that helped analyze employees’ job-related performance and knowledge of the airport and its services. Winners were given a commemorative certificate and cash awards.

The grand prize winner was Raquel Marinas of Travelex (various locations); second place went to Aaron Morgan of LMD Wrapping (International Terminal); and third prize went to Rosie Roque of Simply Gourmet (Terminal 1). The winning retail location was Brookstone in the International Terminal.
