STL Celebrates Mardi Gras With Themed Rocking Chairs, Posters

St. Louis’ historic Soulard Mardi Gras celebration is under way at Lambert-St. Louis International (STL).

Five Mardi Gras-themed rocking chairs are on display at the airport in Terminals 1 and 2 to mark the event. The chairs were painted by local artists chosen by the St. Louis Mardi Gras organizing committee. The chairs complement the airport’s Lambert Rocks program, which started in 2007 with the introduction of rocking chairs in Lambert concourses.

“The airport’s rocking chair campaign, Lambert Rocks, has been a huge hit among our passengers over the last few years, says Rhonda Hamm-Niebruegge, airport director. “The famous Mardi Gras celebration in St. Louis gave us an great opportunity to put a unique twist on the program to showcase local artists, introduce some eye-stopping creations at the airport and really show our support for the community.”

For the second consecutive year, STL is also showcasing official Mardi Gras posters that date back nearly 30 years. They can be seen in the lower level of Terminal 1 and the upper level of Terminal 2. The temporary exhibits also feature some design entries for the 2011 Mardi Gras poster contest.

St. Louis Mardi Gras events began in February and will end with the River City Casino Grand parade on March 5 and the Lumiere Place Light Up the Night Fat Tuesday parade on March 8.
