YEG, JFK Remain Leaders Of ARN’s 2015 Fact Book Top-Performing Airports List

Airport Revenue News has released the sales performance results for the Top 50 performing airports in the 2015 edition of the ARN Fact Book. The reference book, which spans more than 400 pages, contains the most comprehensive information on airport concessions and revenue. This information is utilized by airports, businesses servicing airports, consultants, research firms, media and more.

Data in the 19th edition of the ARN Fact Book, culled from the participating 98 North American airports and based on 2014 statistics, reveal an upward trend in each of the data categories. Enplanements in the airports on the list rose 9.9 percent from 556,587,425 to 611,951,345. This percentage increase was almost triple the 3.6 percent gain from 2012 to 2013.

With regard to the concession categories, food and beverage and news gift experienced 15 percent and 13.8 percent double-digit growth, respectively; specialty retail rose 7.8 percent. Overall, total sales on the list, which exclude duty free, rose 13 percent. The increase in enplanements and total sales yielded a 4.7 percent increase in sales per enplaned passenger from $10.36 to $10.85.

For the second year in a row, Edmonton International (YEG) finished atop the list. The airport’s sales per enplanement figure of $15.72 represents a 3.3 percent increase over the previous year; this coincided with a 5 percent rise in enplanements from the previous year. John F. Kennedy International (JFK) again finished second on the list, outpacing the prior year by nearly 8 percent, with a 5.5 percent increase in enplanements. The largest sales-per-enplanement gain was achieved by San Diego International (SAN), which increased 22 percent from $8.12 to $9.91. This jump is attributed to the opening of the airport’s new concessions program and 5.9 percent growth in overall enplanements. Other notable sales-per-enplanement gains were made by Jacksonville International (JAX) at 15 percent and Los Angeles International (LAX) 11 percent.
