The International Air Transport Association is planning to introduce a security tunnel system to help speed up the process.
Director General Giovanni Bisignani says he is aware of the delays caused by checking everyone’s shoes and laptops. Under the new system, passengers would be examined based on biometric and booking data, and then security personnel would assess the person’s risk. From there, the traveler would be sent to one of three security tunnels, which would each provide a different level of check. Travelers who are deemed low risk would carry their luggage through minimum-security tunnels and past a sensor that would look for dangerous items, and then go straight to their departure areas.
Passenger profiles would be made from information provided when the flight ticket is bought. It was stressed that ethnicity would not play a role in the profile.
The plans could be in place by 2014 if governments agree to the new measures.
