LGB Reaches Food Scrap Recycling Milestone

Long Beach Airport (LGB) announced that its food scrap recycling program has diverted 35 tons of organic waste from landfills since its inception in 2021. The LBG program, created in partnership with concessionaire Paradies Lagardère, sorts organic food scraps from the airport’s concessions into a separate refuse system, which is picked up by Long Beach City Refuse and processed at one of three facilities: Recology Blossom Valley Organics, Sage Ranch Compost or American Organics Composting Facility. Compost from LGB’s concessions is then reused for industrial and agricultural purposes in the region. The food scrap recycling program aligns with the State of California’s legislative sustainability requirements, including Assembly Bill 1826, which  requires commercial operations to divert organic waste, and State Senate Bill 1383, which  outlines statewide targets to reduce organic waste by 75% as well as recover a minimum of 20% of edible food for human consumption by 2025. Paradies Lagardere’s concessions at LGB are also certified by the Green Restaurant Association, ensuring new sustainability standards are met in concessions operations.

“As a city committed to sustainability, Long Beach is proud to see our award-winning airport undertaking innovative waste diversion initiatives that have already diverted a whopping 35 tons of waste that otherwise would have wound up in a landfill,” said Mayor Rex Richardson.

“Food scrap recycling is just one piece in Long Beach Airport’s broader commitment to sustainability,” said airport director Cynthia Guidry. “We’re grateful to our concession operators for their partnership in continuing to set higher standards for environmentally conscious and efficient operations.”
