McMurray Tapped To Lead CDA

Michael McMurray has been selected to lead the Chicago Department of Aviation as commissioner. He replaces Jamie Rhee, who departed the organization earlier this year.

McMurray hails from the private sector, most recently serving as managing director and president of transportation and infrastructure at Wight & Company, a multidisciplinary architectural, engineering, transportation and construction firm. The appointment requires City Council confirmation.

“Mike McMurray’s extensive experience in both the private and public sector will serve us well during this transformative period for our airports,” said Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson. “Mike brings a deep expertise in all areas critical to our airports’ success. His background in procurement, construction, and law are exactly what we need to navigate the challenges and opportunities that our airports present for the city. I look forward to working alongside him and our partners to enhance our airports and strengthen Chicago’s position as a world-class destination for visitors and residents alike.”

At Wight & Company, McMurray guided the firm’s efforts to address the Chicago region’s growing need for innovative solutions to complex transportation and infrastructure projects. He oversaw all strategic planning, led engagement in securing pivotal partnerships and drove growth initiatives.

“I’m honored to lead the Chicago Department of Aviation at such a pivotal time,” McMurray said. “Having worked in both the public and private sectors, I understand the complexity and importance of our airport system to Chicago’s economy and global standing. I’m committed to building upon the strong foundation established by my predecessor while bringing fresh perspectives to ensure that our airports continue to serve as an international model of excellence and innovation.”

As an attorney, McMurray has practiced law in the public and private sectors, notably in the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office as assistant state’s attorney, the U.S. Social Security Administration as assistant regional counsel, and the United Auto Workers as senior counsel.

McMurray’s extensive private sector business experience is coupled with city government credentials. He previously was deputy commissioner for Chicago Department of Aviation, managing deputy commissioner for the Department of General Services and first deputy commissioner of the Department of Procurement Services and Contract Compliance Officer.
